Africa-Press – Uganda. Higher education institutions have urged the government to provide necessary equipment to support the new tourism curriculum, emphasizing that practical skills are critical for producing job-ready graduates.
The appeal was made by Racheal Mindra Katoroogo, Deputy Principal of Makerere University Business School (MUBS), during a graduation ceremony for students who completed tourism-related courses.
“We request the government to support us with the necessary equipment for the new curriculum so that we can produce more competent graduates,” Katoroogo said.
A total of 20 students graduated with qualifications in Air Ticketing and Reservation Management, Events Planning, Tours and Travel, among other programs. Katoroogo noted that equipping institutions will help learners gain practical skills needed in the job market.
She also urged the government to align support with the Parish Development Model (PDM) to enable graduates to access startup assistance.
“If linked to PDM, our graduates can receive support to start their own businesses and create jobs,” she added.
The ceremony was attended by various leaders, including officials from the tourism sector. Celestine Katongole, head of the program, encouraged untrained workers in the tourism industry to seek formal training.
“Those working in tourism without adequate skills should come for training so that together we can improve service quality and grow the sector,” Katongole said.
James Mwere, chairperson of the tour guides’ regulatory body, called on the government to support tour operating companies to strengthen the industry.
“We appeal to the government to support tour operators because they play a key role in promoting Uganda’s tourism potential,” Mwere said.
At the end of the ceremony, the graduates received certificates recognizing their competence and were encouraged to pursue professional careers in tourism.
