Govt Launches Third Phase of Digital Registration Plates

Africa-Press – Uganda. The Ministry of Works and Transport has officially launched the third phase of the digital registration plates project under the Intelligent Transfer Monitoring System initiative.

The programme, managed by Joint Stock Global Security Company, aims to enhance the safety of lives and property, according to the Ministry’s PRO, Susan Kataike.

To replace old number plates, vehicle owners will pay Shs150,000, while motorcycle owners will pay Shs50,000.

The ministry has set a two-year deadline for all owners to transition to digital plates, after which vehicles without the new plates will be prohibited from operating on Ugandan roads.

“If a person completed all processes with URA and the Ministry of Works and Transport and were assigned a number plate, they are still eligible to use the old plate,” Kataike said.

The shift to digital plates comes at a time when the contract for the previous supplier the expired, prompting the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to adopt the modernized system.

Acting Manager URA Eastern region Jimmy Oluka hailed the initiative as a “game-changer,” highlighting its potential to improve their operation.

Since the project began in 2023, 2,143 government vehicles and 11,721 motorcycles have been fixed with digital plates.

The third phase launch is expected to increase these numbers, contributing to a more secure and efficient transport system.

Galina Sbalova, spokesperson for Joint Stock Global Security Company, reassured Ugandans of the project’s readiness to meet demand.

“We are fully equipped to roll out digital plates for all Ugandans within the stipulated timeframe,” she said.

Vehicle and motorcycle owners are encouraged to embrace the system and comply within the two-year period to avoid disruptions.

The Ministry and URA remain committed to ensuring a smooth transition to this groundbreaking technology.
