Govt Pledges Shs8.6Bn to Rebuild NRM Support in Luweero

Africa-Press – Uganda. NRM leaders have pledged Shs8.6 billion for key development projects in Luweero district, aiming to rebuild political support ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The delegation, led by Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka and NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko, visited Luweero under the “Buganda for Museveni” campaign — a strategic push to regain ground in the Buganda region.

At the heart of the visit was a renewed government commitment to address long-standing local issues, including poor road infrastructure, frequent power outages, and stalled development projects.

Agnes Kirabo, the Central Region Youth MP and Luweero native aspiring to be Woman MP, highlighted key community demands. She called for the completion of a long-promised pineapple juice processing factory to add value to the district’s abundant pineapple production.

“We are known for growing pineapples in Luweero. A juice factory would transform our local economy,” Kirabo said.

She also pointed to unfinished public projects such as the district headquarters and hospital, as well as growing concerns over land grabbing and misuse of Parish Development Model (PDM) funds.

Some locals accused SACCO leaders of demanding Shs200,000 from beneficiaries to access PDM funds.

Responding, Attorney General Kiwanuka announced government’s approval of Shs6.1 billion to complete the district headquarters in the 2025/2026 financial year budget, alongside Shs2.5 billion allocated for the pineapple juice factory.

“President Museveni is committed to economic empowerment through initiatives like the PDM. The pineapple factory is a key part of this vision,” Kiwanuka said.

He also ordered Luweero district officials to investigate SACCO fund complaints and report back to government.

Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu addressed power outages, attributing them to ongoing transformer replacements following UMEME’s exit. She urged patience and condemned vandalism of electricity infrastructure, which hampers progress.

Deputy Secretary General Namayanja expressed disappointment with some local leaders who have opposed the PDM, urging them to recognize its positive impact on livelihoods.

“Luweero people must vote wisely in 2026, choosing leaders who build rather than destroy,” she said.

State Minister for Kampala Joseph Kabuye Kyofatogabye reminded residents of their historic role in bringing NRM to power, calling on them to support the party’s success once again.

In the 2021 elections, opposition party NUP won key seats in Luweero. The NRM now seeks to regain the district through visible development and stronger community engagement.
