Africa-Press – Uganda. Hoima District Woman Member of Parliament, Harriet Businge, has called on companies in the oil and gas sector to increase their budgets for corporate social responsibility (CSR), particularly in the Bunyoro sub-region.
Businge made the appeal while speaking as the chief guest during belated World Press Freedom Day celebrations held at Hoima Buffalo Hotel.
The event was organized by the Hoima Media Sacco in partnership with CNOOC Uganda.
“There is a need for increased budget allocation for CSR activities by companies operating in Bunyoro, especially those in the oil and gas sector,” Businge said.
“This will enhance economic development and help address the environmental and social risks facing our communities.”
She stressed that responsible corporate behaviour can play a critical role in improving livelihoods and fostering sustainable development in resource-rich regions.
Corporate social responsibility refers to the business approach where companies integrate social and environmental concerns into their operations and interactions with stakeholders.
Also speaking at the event, Hoima Media Sacco chairperson Christopher Nkalu echoed the MP’s sentiments, emphasizing the role of corporate players in contributing to the socio-economic progress of host communities.
The event also included a call to action for journalists in the region. Media practitioners were urged to uphold professionalism, invest in personal branding, and seek alternative sources of income to maintain independence and avoid undue influence.
“Journalists must not allow themselves to be used by politicians. Strong ethics and self-reliance are key to building a credible and respected media,” Nkalu advised.
The celebrations brought together journalists, civil society, and corporate representatives to reflect on the role of media in fostering accountability, especially in regions experiencing rapid industrial growth.
