Africa-Press – Uganda. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among decisively won the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) race for the female vice chairperson seat on Wednesday, defeating former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga with a landslide 92% of the votes.

Among secured 11,680 votes, nearly 13 times the 902 votes garnered by Kadaga, in what has been described as one of the most decisive election results in recent Ugandan political history. Signs of Among’s dominance were evident even before counting began, as long queues of delegates formed behind her while Kadaga struggled to gather visible support. Among swept all regions of the country, including overseas delegates, and secured overwhelming support in key strongholds.

In the diaspora, Among got 71 votes against Kadaga’s 36. In Rwenzori, she amassed 835 votes to Kadaga’s 13, while in Teso she won 899 votes to Kadaga’s solitary vote. Greater Masaka delivered 581 votes for Among versus 25 for Kadaga; Ankole saw Among at 1,524 votes against 65 for Kadaga; Kigezi gave her 576 to Kadaga’s 30; Bunyoro delivered 740 votes against 8; Greater Luweero 306 to 26; West Nile 1,022 to 7; Acholi 744 to 21; and Lango 687 to 12.

Kadaga’s traditional stronghold of Busoga also saw Among outperforming her. In districts such as Bugiri, Kaliro, Namayingo, Iganga, and Buyende, Among secured substantial margins, amassing a total of 499 votes (52.3%) against Kadaga’s 455 votes. Analysts note that Among has steadily eaten into the networks that once sustained Kadaga’s political career, building influence among Busoga legislators who previously relied on Kadaga for favours. She married Moses Magogo from neighbouring Buyende District and strategically positioned herself in the region, even attempting, unsuccessfully, to claim the symbolic title of Mama Busoga.

Kadaga’s victories were limited to a few districts, including Bugweri, Namutumba, Kamuli, Luuka, Jinja District, Jinja City, and Mayuge. However, the final tally confirmed that she could not match Among’s nationwide appeal.

Political analysts interpret the result as a combination of Among’s strategic cultivation of influence, her ability to chip away at Kadaga’s traditional support base, and her commanding performance across all regions. The landslide victory signals a shift in internal NRM dynamics and underscores Among’s growing stature within the party ahead of the 2026 general elections.
