Africa-Press – Uganda. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga has said he remains unfazed by criticism, emphasising that he is not the first person in his role to encounter such scrutiny.
The Katikkiro noted that many previous Buganda premiers have faced similar criticism, but what sets his, is the influence of social media, which amplifies these voices.
Mayiga made the comments during an exclusive interview with Sanyuka Television’s Brian Macona on Tuesday.
“I’m not the first Katikkiro to be criticised; the difference now is largely due to social media, which wasn’t around in the past,” Mayiga explained.
Mayiga, a member of the Mutima clan, was appointed Katikkiro by the Kabaka of Buganda, Muwenda Mutebi II, in May 2013, succeeding Engineer John Baptist Walusimbi.
Despite his accomplishments during his tenure, he has frequently faced criticism, particularly on social media, with some questioning his management of Kingdom affairs.
During the interview, Mayiga asserted that the number of critics is quite small, but their voices are amplified in the current social media landscape, which did not exist during the tenures of previous Katikkiros.
“The people who criticise me are very few, probably just around 10,” he stated.
He added, “Social media is pervasive today. If it had existed many years ago, you would have seen past Katikkiros facing criticism as well. For instance, if a Katikkiro attempted to improve relations with Bunyoro and failed, he would be criticised too.”
