The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has officially nominated Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga to contest the Kamuli District Woman Member of Parliament seat, while she also declared her intention to vie for the influential 2nd National Vice Chairperson position in the party’s Central Executive Committee ahead of the 2026 elections.
Kadaga, a seasoned legislator with over three decades of political experience, commands significant influence in Kamuli and the wider Busoga sub-region.
Her nomination came amid fierce competition from aspirants including Noet Nangobi, Deborah Mwesigwa, and Veronica Kagona, signaling a hotly contested primary season.
Speaking at the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala, Kadaga expressed gratitude to her supporters and reaffirmed her dedication to driving transformative development in Busoga.
“This nomination is not just a renewal of a mandate—it is a reaffirmation of my commitment to the people of Kamuli and Busoga at large,” she said.
In a strategic move, Kadaga also announced her candidacy for the role of 2nd National Vice Chairperson of the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC), the party’s highest decision-making organ.
“I am in full gear for the 2nd National Vice Chairperson CEC race. The voice of Busoga must be heard at the top, and I’m prepared to provide that leadership,” she declared.
Kadaga used the occasion to highlight her long-standing advocacy for completing and operationalizing Jinja Airport, emphasizing its potential to unlock trade, tourism, and investment opportunities in the region.
The airport, expected to become a secondary international gateway, is poised to boost connectivity and regional economic growth, particularly in eastern Uganda.
Having first entered Parliament in 1989, Kadaga made history as Uganda’s first female Speaker of Parliament.
Her enduring political stature and grassroots support continue to shape both local and national politics.
As the NRM gears up for primaries and the 2026 general elections approach, Kadaga’s dual campaign for parliamentary and party leadership positions marks her as a formidable contender aiming to solidify her influence across Uganda’s political landscape.
