Kasango: Family talks hit deadlock over burial site

Africa-PressUganda. For two days running, late lawyer Robert Kasango’s wife and children and his mother’s family have failed to agree on his final resting place.

The standoff between Kasango’s wife Nice Bitarabeho and the side of the deceased’s mother, Ms Rose Kabise, erupted after the funeral service at All Saints Cathedral Nakasero on Tuesday.Ms Kabise wants her son buried at his ancestral home in Tororo District while Ms Bitarabeho wants her late husband buried in Kabarole, her home district, where the couple reportedly have land.

By last evening talks between the two families were still in a deadlock. “We don’t have any resolution yet as families. We are still locked in meetings as we have not agreed on a common burial place,” Mr Andrew Mwenda, one of Kasango’s family friends who has been attending the negotiations between the two families, said by telephone.

By last evening, there were some claims on social media that the stalemate had been resolved and that Kasango would be buried in Tororo, but the wife dismissed the reports. “The discussions between Kasango’s next of kin who are the wife and children and the extended family of his mother’s side are still ongoing. No consensus has been reached. The extended family of his mother’s side, and not his father’s side, none of whom is Kasango’s clan, have made it their business to decide where he should rest,” Ms Bitarabeho told Daily Monitor by telephone.

Daily Monitor

learnt that the other attendees in the negotiations on the side of Kasango’s mother include Mr Fox Odoi, Ms Kabise and her daughter-in-law. Mr Odoi, when contacted, referred us to Mr Mwenda, saying he is the only one permitted to speak to the media. Other family members from the Tororo side were not available to speak to the media.

On Tuesday, chaotic scenes ensued at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero, when a group of mourners led by Kasango’s mother, snatched the casket containing the lawyer’s remains and sped off with it in a truck towards Tororo for burial. However, police later intercepted the group and the body was brought back to A-Plus funeral management home at Mengo in Kampala .
