Africa-Press – Uganda. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on parents to become role models for their children by instilling traditional values, cultural norms, and a sense of heritage, as a foundation for stronger families and a more stable society.
He made the remarks during the official launch of the preparations for the 2025 Clan Heads’ Cultural Training Program, set to take place on October 24, 2025, at the Lubiri Palace in Mengo.
The launch event was held at Bulange, Mengo, where clan heads (Abataka), their deputies, and clan members gathered to commence the planning for the annual cultural workshop.
The Katikkiro emphasised the vital role of cultural heritage in shaping responsible citizens, highlighting the importance of the family unit in passing down values such as respect, hard work, and integrity.
“Clans are the custodians of our customs and values. Parents must lead by example, teaching children that character is more important than appearance,” he said. “When we lose our culture, we lose ourselves.”
This year’s cultural training program will run under the theme: “The Family is the Foundation of Humanity.” The Chairperson of the Clan Heads’ Council, Namwama Augustine Kizito Mutumba of the Kkobe clan, unveiled the theme, noting that the 2025 training will focus on areas including family values, cultural practices, the environment, and traditional ceremonies in Buganda.
Namwama expressed concern over rising moral decay and the negative influence of modern trends on young people.
“There is a growing crisis where the youth seek masculinity and identity through misguided means,” he said. “It is time we restored the family as the first school of character and responsibility.”
Representing the Minister of Culture and Heritage, Buganda’s Minister for Information, Israel Kitooke, echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for families to teach discipline and hard work from an early age to secure a more stable society.
During the event, the Katikkiro also reflected on his 12-year tenure as Prime Minister, expressing gratitude to the people of Buganda for their unwavering support and prayers.
He reiterated the Kabaka’s vision of a culturally grounded, united, and progressive Buganda.
In addition, he extended an open invitation to all clans and their members to attend the opening matches of the highly anticipated Bika Football Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Wankulukuku Stadium.
The event concluded with the Katikkiro officially signing the planning banner, symbolising the beginning of this significant cultural initiative. Clan elders from across Buganda expressed their unanimous support, underscoring the urgency of restoring the strength of the family unit in today’s fast-changing world.
