Kyomukama Gains Momentum Ahead of Ibanda NRM Woman MP Primaries

Africa-Press – Uganda. With the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries set for July 17, the race for the Ibanda District Woman MP seat has taken a dramatic turn, with Jovrine Kaliisa Kyomukama surging ahead of her rivals in public perception and support.

Kyomukama, who currently serves as Deputy National Coordinator for the Parish Development Model (PDM), is challenging incumbent MP Jane Bainomugisha alongside Caroline Arituha, Aisha Nakaketo, and Lydia Kapasika Katsyoyoyo.

All are competing for the party flag in what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched races in western Uganda.

In recent days, Kyomukama has drawn large crowds across the district, including in Ishongororo Town Council—the home area of her main rival Bainomugisha—where she received a rousing reception during joint campaigns.

“The warm welcome I received in Ishongororo, despite it being the home area of my opponent, shows the confidence and trust the people have in my leadership,” Kyomukama told reporters after her rally on Wednesday.

“I believe I’m going to win the NRM primaries with more than 90 percent of the vote.”

Kyomukama’s message has been anchored in grassroots mobilisation and her hands-on role in implementing the PDM, a flagship government poverty eradication initiative.

She says the programme has allowed her to connect directly with the people and understand their needs.

“People have seen my practical commitment to service delivery and poverty eradication. They want someone who walks the talk,” she said.

However, incumbent Jane Bainomugisha insists she remains the candidate to beat, pointing to her years of parliamentary service and community engagement.

“I still have strong support on the ground,” Bainomugisha said. “My people know my record and they will not be swayed. I am not threatened in any way by the current excitement.”

Despite her confidence, analysts and observers on the ground say the political tide may be turning in favour of Kyomukama, who is resonating with a younger and more issue-driven electorate.

“Kyomukama is attracting support not just from NRM loyalists but also from undecided voters who are impressed by her energy and grassroots engagement,” said Clifton Manyirwomujuni, a political analyst based in Ibanda Municipality.

With joint campaign activities entering their final stretch, the contest in Ibanda has become a litmus test for incumbency versus mobilisation power. As July 17 nears, the district remains politically charged, with many now waiting to see whether Kyomukama’s surge will translate into victory at the ballot box.
