Africa-Press – Uganda. Makerere University has announced that this year’s Mark Run aims to raise Shs 2 billion to support children with disabilities, with funds earmarked to improve their lives and access to services through initiatives at the university.
Speaking at an interview this morning, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, emphasized the dual purpose of the run which will take place on 17th August this year to promote health and to advance inclusivity.
“This is an opportunity for all people to come and renew their health,” said Prof. Nawangwe. “Even those in wheelchairs shall be able to participate in this charity run.”
The annual charity event, organized by the university, has become one of the largest inclusive runs in the country, welcoming participants of all abilities. Proceeds from this year’s run will be directed toward programs supporting children with disabilities under Makerere’s community outreach efforts.
Nawangwe noted that the event is part of a broader university initiative to bring together academics and the public for social good.
“We are getting people from the public to work with our professors,” he said. “If you are unable to run, you can still contribute to the cause through the Makerere Fund.”
Following the Mark Run, the university will also continue its tradition of holding the Makerere Marathon, another popular annual event aimed at supporting various development projects.
The announcement has drawn widespread support from alumni, students, and members of the public, with calls for more Ugandans to participate in both physical and financial ways.
Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and most prestigious higher institution, has in recent years prioritized inclusive development as part of its long-term strategic vision.
