Mao Targets 30 DP Seats in 12Th Parliament

Africa-Press – Uganda. Democratic Party (DP) President-General Norbert Mao has announced an ambitious goal to secure at least 30 parliamentary seats in the forthcoming 2026 general elections.

This declaration comes in the wake of internal party divisions and a recent chaotic delegates conference in Mbarara.

Mao, who also serves as Uganda’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, expressed confidence that his leadership would strengthen the party’s position ahead of the elections.

“Our victory in Mbarara is a testament to the party’s resilience. We aim to build on this momentum to achieve a significant presence in Parliament,” Mao said.

Despite the optimism, the party faces challenges.

Dr Michael Lulume Bayigga, who contested Mao for the presidency, has threatened to announce his next course of action following the Mbarara conference.

Bayigga’s faction, which includes several MPs, has voiced concerns over the party’s direction and Mao’s cooperation with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

In response to these internal tensions, Mao emphasized the importance of unity and strategic planning.

“We are committed to engaging with our members through a nationwide listening tour to ensure that every voice is heard as we prepare for the 2026 elections,” he added.

The upcoming consultations are seen as a critical step for the DP to address internal divisions and strengthen its position in the political landscape ahead of the elections.

As the party navigates these challenges, all eyes will be on how it manages internal dissent and whether it can unite its members to achieve the ambitious goal set by President Mao.

The next few weeks are expected to be pivotal in determining the Democratic Party’s path forward in Uganda’s political arena.
