Africa-Press – Uganda. Farmers in Kyesiiga Sub-county, Masaka District, have received a major boost after the government distributed twenty thousand coffee seedlings aimed at improving household incomes and reducing poverty through commercial agriculture.
The seedlings were donated by the Government of Uganda through the office of former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi. The official launch of the distribution exercise took place at Lwemodde Village in Kyesiiga Sub-county.
Speaking during the handover, Oscar Mutebi, an aide to Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi and coordinator of the initiative, said the intervention was designed to support communities that heavily depend on agriculture for survival.
“People in Masaka have embraced farming as a key economic activity. That is why we decided to support them with quality coffee seedlings to help strengthen household incomes and promote long-term wealth creation,” Mutebi said.
He cautioned beneficiaries, especially the youth, against selling the seedlings, urging them to plant and manage them responsibly. “These seedlings are a source of long-term wealth. If well taken care of, they will transform livelihoods,” he added.
Joseph Ssimbwa, an agricultural extension worker in Kyesiiga Sub-county, confirmed that the seedlings are of high quality and suitable for the area’s soil and climate. He encouraged farmers to follow recommended farming practices to maximize yields and effectively fight poverty.
James Kabiito, the Deputy County Chief representing Ssabagabo–Kyannamukaaka, observed that coffee farming had increased in the area, particularly among people displaced from fishing communities. He said the initiative would revive coffee production and improve economic stability in the region.
Beneficiary farmers, especially the youth, commended the government and Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi for the support, noting that the distribution was carried out without political discrimination.
Several farmers expressed optimism that the coffee seedlings would help them meet household needs, pay school fees for their children, and improve their overall standard of living.
The initiative is part of broader government efforts to promote commercial agriculture as a pathway to sustainable development and poverty reduction in rural communities.
