Mbarara Launches Shs120M Borehole Project to Tackle Water Crisis

Africa-Press – Uganda. Joseph Mucunguzi, the district civil engineer in charge of water, outlined the project’s scope, noting that it includes casing, hand pump installation, and other essential infrastructure to ensure long-term sustainability.

Authorities in Mbarara District have launched a Shs123 million borehole project in a bid to alleviate persistent water shortages in several sub-counties.

The initiative, contracted to KLR Uganda Limited, will see the construction of five boreholes across Kashare, Rwanyamahembe, Bubaare, and Rubaya, with work expected to be completed within three months.

Joseph Mucunguzi, the district civil engineer in charge of water, outlined the project’s scope, noting that it includes casing, hand pump installation, and other essential infrastructure to ensure long-term sustainability.

“This will cost us Shs123,786,500. The contractor, KLR Uganda Ltd, will complete the work in three months,” he said.

During the handover to the contractor, Assistant Resident District Commissioner David Ayijuka urged communities to take responsibility for the boreholes, cautioning against vandalism and neglect.

“This water is for you. Use it well, don’t destroy the boreholes, and report any challenges to the engineer in charge of water,” he advised.

Deputy District Speaker Hilda Kansiime echoed similar sentiments, warning residents against allowing livestock to damage the structures.

“Now that we have this borehole, don’t call it a government borehole. Take care of it,” she said during the launch event in Kashare Sub-county.

District Woman MP Margret Ayebare Rwebyambu commended the project’s focus on high-need, high-population areas, including schools, and emphasized the importance of collaboration in service delivery.

“Service delivery is a chain of leadership, from the local councils to ministries. We must work together to address these challenges,” she said.

The boreholes are expected to provide clean water to thousands of residents, easing the burden of water scarcity in the targeted communities.
