Africa-Press – Uganda. The State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, has announced that he will not contest in the 2026 parliamentary elections, effectively ending his long political journey as Bamunanika County’s most recognisable face in national politics.
Dr Muyingo confirmed that he will not pick nomination forms for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries, citing advice from supporters who encouraged him to take a break from active politics.
“I have consulted widely, and many of my supporters advised me to rest. I have respected their views,” he told journalists.
Though stepping down from the electoral arena, Muyingo pledged to continue supporting development initiatives in Bamunanika.
“My commitment to the people of Bamunanika remains strong. I will still serve, even without holding an official position,” he said.
In the 2021 general elections, Muyingo lost the parliamentary seat to National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Robert Ssekitooleko, who polled 27,850 votes against his 24,463.
The defeat ended a decade-long tenure in Parliament marked by his active involvement in education reforms and grassroots mobilisation.
Following that election, some constituents publicly expressed regret, admitting they may have prioritised party politics over experience and performance.
The sentiment appeared to reflect a softening view towards the veteran politician, even as he chooses to leave the stage.
Muyingo’s exit sets the stage for a potentially competitive race in Bamunanika, with both NRM and opposition figures expected to jostle for the now-open seat in 2026.
