Africa-Press – Uganda. MTN Mobile Money Uganda Limited has partnered with Sanlam Life Insurance Uganda to launch “Family Cover,” a new mobile-based insurance product designed to make life and hospital insurance accessible and affordable for millions of Ugandans.
Offered through MTN’s new “Cover by MoMo” platform, the product enables MTN MoMo customers to insure themselves and up to six family members for as little as Shs500 per month.
The insurance offers up to Shs2 million in life coverage and hospital benefits of up to Shs200,000. Customers who pay their premiums for 12 consecutive months are also rewarded with a 10% cashback bonus.
Jemima Kariuki, Chief Product Officer at MTN Mobile Money Uganda, said the launch is part of the company’s wider digital financial inclusion drive.
“At MTN MoMo, we believe that every Ugandan deserves access to tools that protect their financial future,” she said.
“Cover by MoMo was developed to make insurance simple, mobile, and inclusive.”
The plan includes two key benefits: MyLife, a lump-sum payout upon the policyholder’s death, and MyHospital, which provides cash for hospital admissions—starting from a one-night stay due to accidents or two nights for illnesses.
All aspects of the service, from enrollment to claims, are handled digitally via USSD or online, eliminating the need for paperwork or in-person visits.
To register, MTN users dial 1657#, select “Insure with MoMo,” and follow prompts under “Cover by MoMo.”
Users can add family members, submit claims, and track policies directly through their phones or via the platform website https://ug.coverbymomo.com.
Nicholas Wavamuno, Business Intelligence and Growth Manager at Sanlam Life Insurance Uganda, said the partnership was a milestone in democratizing insurance.
“Family Cover by MoMo offers exceptional value, seamless enrollment, flexible payment, and digital claims—all designed to give Ugandans peace of mind,” he said.
The product targets informal workers, peri-urban families, SME owners, and mobile-first users—especially youth and female-led households, who are often left out by traditional insurance due to cost and complexity.
MTN MoMo says more insurance products will soon be added to the Cover by MoMo platform, expanding the safety net for underserved communities and helping Ugandans achieve long-term financial resilience.
