Africa-Press – Uganda. ELECTION WATCH 2021 |Dokolo district Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal has slammed members of the Opposition for describing the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, as a ‘mole’.Addressing journalists in Lira city on Saturday, Ogwal said those calling Muntu a mole also worked with President Yoweri Museveni but opted out because of disagreements. She singled out Col Dr Kizza Besigye, the former leader of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and four-time presidential candidate.Ogwal said she has been consistent and is among the few authentic opposition members in President Museveni’s government, but others are NRM cadres.”Muntu and Besigye were President Museveni’s cadres, but I always get disappointed when they single out only Muntu,” she said. Before he disagreed with President Museveni, Besigye served as internal affairs state minister, political commissar and state minister for the Office of the President. In 1991, he became commanding officer of the mechanised regiment in Masaka and later served as army chief of logistics and engineering. In 1999, Besigye authored a document accusing NRM of becoming a sectarian and one-man dictatorship. He was arrested and charged for airing his views in the wrong forum. He later brokered a deal in 2000 in which the charges were dropped in exchange for an apology for publishing the document. On the other hand, before parting ways with President Museveni, Gen. Muntu served as army commander, the highest position in the Ugandan military, from 1989 to 1998.Two army generals, Mugisha and Henry Tumukude, the former security minister, are contesting for presidency.Ogwal said the legitimate Opposition in Uganda are few and that people should maintain the integrity and stop double standards.
