Africa-Press – Uganda. Nakapiripirit District has turned to socialmedia to settle a long-standing debate over where to host the upcoming Karamoja Cultural Day.

A poll conducted on the WhatsApp group, “Nakapiripirit Hardcore Politics” asked residents to vote for their preferred venue from a list of five sub-counties: Nakapiripirit Town Council, Nakaale, Namalu, Naturum, and Moruita.

After two weeks of voting, Nakaale emerged the clear favorite, receiving 77 votes. Nakapiripirit Town Council followed with 39 votes, Namalu garnered 16, while Naturum and Moruita received only 2 and 1 votes respectively.

Supporters of Nakaale cited its central location and ample space, making it more accessible for residents across the district.

“Nakaale gives everyone a fair chance to attend,” John Kodet a resident Nakaale said

However, the decision has not gone unchallenged. Some residents continue to push for Nakapiripirit Town Council.

“Nakapiripirit has better accommodation facilities and better infrastructure. Why take the celebration to the bush.” Joseph Loli, a resident of Nakapiripirit Town Council said.

The split mirrors deeper tensions that have lingered since last year, when the venue debate first intensified following Karamoja Cultural Day celebrations in Karenga District, which hosted after Napak in 2023.

Elders and district leaders remain divided, raising questions about whether the WhatsApp poll will hold official weight in the final decision.

Still, the digital vote has brought community voices to the forefront in a region where traditional methods of consultation have often taken precedence.

Karamoja Cultural Day, an annual rotating celebration of the region’s heritage and identity, is expected to draw large crowds in 2025—making the venue choice more crucial than ever.

Whether Nakaale will indeed host the prestigious event now lies in the hands of district authorities and elders.
