NIRA Urges Parents to Register Children for National Ids

Africa-Press – Uganda. Claire Ollama, a registrar from the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), earlier today called on parents to register their children for national identification, emphasising the importance of proper documentation for effective government planning.

According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), 50% of Ugandans are children below the age of 18. Ollama noted that this demographic must be accounted for in national databases to ensure equitable service delivery.

“Parents shouldn’t be hesitant to register their children, even if they have just one identification card from a parent or any close sibling. This shall help the government to equally and effectively plan for the children in the country,” she said.

Ollama emphasised that registering children gives them a recognised identity as Ugandans. She also urged all individuals seeking national identification to go through the proper legal procedures.

She further clarified that foreigners, such as Sudanese nationals who come to Uganda as refugees, will remain registered as refugees and cannot acquire Ugandan national IDs.

The call comes as part of NIRA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national identification systems and ensure inclusive planning across all age groups.
