Africa-Press – Uganda. Residents of Ntungamo District have been called upon to adopt a savings culture and sound financial planning to reduce unnecessary spending that perpetuates poverty.
This message came during a fundraiser for the construction of the new Kishariro Catholic Parish Church, a Shs1.5 billion project.
The current church, built in 1958, no longer meets the needs of the growing congregation.
Construction of the new sanctuary, which began in 2022, has so far consumed Shs639 million raised solely from Christian contributions.
The latest drive seeks an additional Shs800 million to complete the work.
Rev Fr Deusdedit Twesigyeomwe Ekikondanjojo, pastoral coordinator of Mbarara Archdiocese, stressed the importance of saving for the future.
“People often spend on what they already have simply because they go to the market without a plan. We should cultivate a savings culture and minimize unnecessary expenditure,” he said.
Rev Fr Oscar Ahimbisibwe, Kishariro’s first parish priest, recalled the transformation from a small, old church to a sanctuary that will accommodate about 3,000 people.
He also praised First Lady Janet Museveni and all contributors for their support.
Political leaders emphasized unity between government and church for community development.
Francis Mwijukye, MP for Buhweju County, urged voters to choose leaders who are bold and articulate, representing their needs effectively.
Speaking on behalf of the First Lady, Ntungamo Woman MP Josyline Kamateneti applauded the initiative and called for collaboration among NRM leaders.
Janet Museveni highlighted that national development is a shared responsibility.
“With combined effort, Kishariro will complete this noble task of building the Lord’s sanctuary,” she said.
