NUP to Appeal Court Ruling that Nullified Nalukoola’S Election

Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced the will challenge a High Court Judgement that nullified the election of Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, describing the judgment as politically motivated and legally flawed.

On Monday, the High Court in Kampala, presided over by Justice Bernard Namanya, declared Nalukoola’s seat vacant after finding that his election had been marred by irregularities.

In his ruling, Justice Namanya cited evidence that the legislator campaigned on election day and that voting was disrupted in 14 polling stations—grounds which the court said significantly affected the outcome of the 2021 parliamentary race.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from NUP leadership, with the party’s Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express outrage.

“A day of infamy!,” said NUP secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya.

“So Judge Bernard Namanya has nullified the election of comrade Nalukoola claiming that he campaigned on election day and that elections were disrupted at 14 polling stations!”

Nalukoola, without giving any details, said they will challenge the decision in the Court of Appeal.

“Hopefully, the Court of Appeal will overturn this absurd decision,” he said.

Nalukoola, a seasoned human rights lawyer and vocal critic of the ruling regime, was elected to Parliament on March 13 on the NUP for Kawempe North by-election after the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya.

He is among a group of opposition lawmakers who have been vocal on issues of governance, police brutality, and electoral reforms.
