Africa-Press – Uganda. United Bank for Africa (UBA) Uganda joined the rest of the world in commemorating Africa Day on Friday, May 23, 2025.

The festivities took place at the bank’s Head Office on Jinja Road, Kampala, and were mirrored across all UBA subsidiaries in Africa, as well as offices in the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates. This year’s theme was “Africa by Africans: Partnering for Progress.”

The celebration saw UBA staff dressed in vibrant African wear, reflecting the continent’s cultural richness.

Across UBA offices, traditional music and performances lit up the day, while guests enjoyed iconic African cuisines, uniting staff, customers, and communities in a shared heritage.

Speaking during the event, UBA Uganda’s Managing Director/CEO Kenneth Kisambira emphasized the significance of the day, describing it as a moment to reflect on Africa’s growth in socio-economic development, reforms, and cultural transformation.

“Our slogan, Africa’s Global Bank, reflects our presence across East, West, Central, and Southern Africa,” Kisambira noted. “UBA was established to empower African enterprises. Through initiatives like the Tony Elumelu Foundation, we support entrepreneurs with seed capital and business growth tools. Celebrating Africa Day is part of honoring our roots.”

Kisambira further explained that promoting African culture and enterprise is central to UBA’s mission.

“We are proud to be an African bank serving Africans. As we work together to uplift our communities and economies, we continue to focus on supporting SMEs with tailored financing solutions.”

He highlighted that UBA Uganda, in collaboration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), has secured USD 250 million (approx. shs950 billion) to boost SME development.

“Uganda is rich with entrepreneurial spirit, but business survival remains a challenge. That’s why at UBA, we go beyond banking—we partner with businesses to ensure they thrive.”

“Our relationship managers play a vital role in advising clients and ensuring sustainable growth. We don’t just offer financial solutions—we also step in with guidance whenever early signs of business challenges arise,” Kisambira added.

Also speaking at the event, Hoziana Niyonsaba, Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at UBA Uganda, said the Africa Day celebration is about unity, progress, and pride.

“This day reminds us of our roots and the strides we’ve made as Africans. Whether within the continent or in the diaspora, Africans are making a difference. As a bank with African DNA, we take this opportunity to celebrate our culture, our people, and our progress,” she said.

Although Africa Day officially falls on May 25, which will be Sunday, this year ,UBA held celebrations on the preceding Friday to accommodate the work schedule.

UBA marks Africa Day annually, in alignment with the official observance across the continent. The day honors the founding of the African Union on May 25, 1963, and serves as a platform to showcase Africa’s cultural and economic potential.

Through such initiatives, UBA reinforces its mission to be a dominant financial institution on the continent and a key driver of African economic growth.

Operating in over 20 African countries and international financial hubs, UBA is one of Africa’s largest employers in the banking sector.

With a strong commitment to financial inclusion and digital innovation, UBA continues to serve millions of customers across retail, commercial, and institutional segments.
