Africa-Press – Uganda. The National Unity Platform’s Elections Management Committee (EMC), led by Eastern Uganda Commissioner Fred Egesa, has launched an intensive vetting process to select party flagbearers for local government positions in the forthcoming general elections across Busoga Region.

The exercise, which started today in Jinja City and Bugiri Municipality, marks the party’s final preparations for the elections.

NUP regional offices in Busoga were filled with aspirants seeking positions ranging from municipality mayors and sub-county chairpersons to councilors, all undergoing in-depth interviews and community strength assessments.

Egesa admitted the process had proven more demanding than expected.

“We thought it was going to be an easy task and we anticipated completing it in just one day. However, due to the overwhelming number of aspirants, we have had to extend the process to tomorrow,” he said.

With more than 7,000 aspirants from across Busoga’s districts, NUP has split the vetting into two zones to manage the large turnout.

Busoga East covers Namutumba, Iganga, Bugweri, Namayingo, Mayuge, and Bugiri, where aspirants are being vetted in Bugiri.

Meanwhile, Jinja City is hosting candidates from Jinja District, Luuka, Kamuli, Kaliro, and Buyende.

Samuel Akalyamawa, NUP’s Jinja District Chairman, said the division was necessary to ensure an orderly and thorough selection.

The surge in aspirants reflects NUP’s growing popularity in Busoga, attracting new leaders eager to advance the party’s vision of inclusive and progressive governance.

Muhammad Musis Kibugujju, a prominent NUP leader from Walukuba-Masese in Jinja, voiced confidence in the party’s readiness.

“We have prepared enough to take power this time round,” he said.

As the vetting enters its second day, the party faces the challenge of narrowing the field while maintaining transparency and accountability.

The process underscores NUP’s strategic push to secure a strong foothold in the upcoming local government races.
