Africa-Press – Uganda. With just four days to Uganda Martyrs’ Day, increasing numbers of pilgrims are arriving at Namugongo, many battling fatigue, malaria, and painful foot injuries sustained during their long journeys.

Among the latest arrivals were pilgrims from Kenya, who reached the Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine around midday.

Visibly drained, many moved in search of resting spots, their faces bearing the marks of physical and emotional exhaustion.

Several pilgrims have already been rushed to medical tents, where health workers are reporting a sharp rise in daily cases.

“We’ve set up multiple tents because the number of pilgrims needing medical attention keeps growing,” said Busingye Olive, Deputy Health Officer for Kayunga District under the Lugazi Diocese.

“We started with a few on Monday and Tuesday, but by yesterday we had over 300 cases. The number is expected to increase.”

She revealed that the most common health challenges include malaria, general fatigue, and foot-related injuries such as blisters and swelling—conditions worsened by long-distance walking under harsh weather conditions.

“Some arrive with malaria, so we’ve set up a field lab to test and treat everyone accordingly,” Busingye added.

Despite mounting pressure on medical resources, she reassured pilgrims of continuous care. Lugazi Diocese is working in coordination with the Ministry of Health and referral hospitals to manage the situation.

“Mulago National Referral Hospital, Naguru Hospital, and other partners are supporting us, especially with referral cases,” she said.

Yet amid the pain and exhaustion, spirits remain high. Pilgrims can still be seen singing, dancing, and praising God for the strength to complete their spiritual journey.

Meanwhile, schools are also taking part in Martyrs’ Day activities, holding special Masses for students in line with long-standing tradition.
