Police Block NUP Fundraising Drive in Mubende

Africa-Press – Uganda. Police in Mubende have blocked a National Unity Platform (NUP) fundraising drive that was scheduled to take place at the party offices in Kirungi Ward, Mubende Municipality.

As early as 7am, police officers raided the NUP offices in Kirungi Cell, where the party had organized the fundraising event aimed at supporting NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu ahead of the 2026 campaigns.

According to Pafuladito Kyeyune, the NUP Chairperson for Mubende District, a security meeting instructed party members not to carry out any fundraising activities and directed them to write to the Inspector General of Police for clearance.

“It is unfortunate that we had organized our fundraising meeting at our offices here in Kirungi, which we believe is not against the law,” Kyeyune said.

“We had a meeting with the RDC, and they directed us to write to the Inspector General of Police—something we find to be a complicated process.”

Kyeyune added that several party leaders from the NUP Secretariat were expected to attend the event and had already set off for Mubende.

“We were expecting party leaders including Balimwezo, Zaake, Kabuye, and the Vice President for Buganda Region, Hon. Kivumbi. We still believe they are on their way to Mubende,” he noted.

Harunah Kabali, the NUP Registrar for Mubende Municipality, emphasized the importance of unity and resilience among NUP members in the face of continued police interference.

“I want to call upon all NUP members in Mubende to remain focused. One day we shall overcome all this. We are going to reschedule another day for the fundraising,” said Kabali.

Party members expressed their dissatisfaction with the police’s actions, stating that this would not stop them from supporting NUP.

Ismael Ssegawa, commonly known as Sureman, an aspiring MP for Mubende Municipality, described the incident as disheartening.

“It is very sad to see men in uniform blocking the young generation from conducting a peaceful fundraising event—especially one held at our own party offices. But all in all, we shall overcome this oppression,” he said.

Bob Richard Kyamanywa, another aspiring MP for Mubende Municipality, also expressed strong support for the party president.

“As NUP members in Mubende, we are very committed to supporting our president, Kyagulanyi. We all know that we must paint Mubende red come 2026. Blocking us from holding today’s event will not intimidate us,” Kyamanywa said.

By press time, the police had not released any statement regarding the blockade of the NUP fundraising drive.
