Police recover stolen fuel tank truck, assailants still at large

Africa-Press – Uganda. Police have recovered a semi-trailer tanker, under registration number UAU 402E that was reported stolen three days ago.

A group of thugs in a Toyota Wish intercepted a semi-trailer loaded with kerosene, destined for Kampala along Busia-Jinja road on Saturday night.

Police spokesperson, Mr Fred Enanga, on Monday told journalists that the thugs stopped the truck registration number UAU 402E, tied the driver identified as Abdul Noor, a Somali national based in Kisumu, Kenya and robbed him of Shs120,000.

In an update on Tuesday, Mr Enanga said the semi-trailer tanker, Mercedes Benz, blue in colour, was recovered later on Monday with the 34 tonnes of Kerosene still intact, from Jinja City by the by the territorial police from Kiira region.

“All the Kerosene, which was being transported from Kenya to Kampala Prompet Energies Ltd, depot was found intact,” he said.

The statement further clarified that the scene was thoroughly documented, and the trailer with all its goods were handed over to the management of Prompet Energies Ltd.

The police also revealed that the driver of the trailer, Abdul Nuru, was found dumped in Kakira sugar plantation. He was, according to the police update, was given first aid and his statement recorded at Iganga police station.

The police are currently man-hunting the suspects who fled from the scene. They also called upon transporters to remain vigilant especially when transporting goods at night.

“The incident also shows that goods in transit, including fuel, continue to be targeted especially at night, which calls for extra vigilance and target hardening measures,” the statement read.

The police further urge all truck drivers to call the National Operations Command Center on telephone numbers 0800199399, 0800199699 and report any suspicious activity.
