Africa-Press – Uganda. The fourth edition of the Run for the Nile is set for 28th March 2026 at the Jinja Rugby Grounds, bringing together over 15,000 participants from Uganda and beyond to champion the protection of the River Nile and Lake Victoria.

Organized by the Rotary Club of Jinja in partnership with Rotary clubs from Kampala Central, Jinja City, Jinja Metro, Kyadondo, Njeru, and Source of the Nile, the annual event combines sport with environmental advocacy.

Proceeds will fund tree-planting campaigns, community cleanups, and conservation education programs aimed at promoting responsible stewardship of Uganda’s critical water ecosystems.

“Environmental degradation in and around the Nile Basin is increasingly threatening livelihoods. Rapid urban growth, industrial expansion, and agricultural runoff continue to introduce pollutants into water systems, particularly near major population centers,” said Tomson Ofwono, Chairman of the Organizing Committee and member of the Rotary Club of Jinja.

Lake Victoria, which feeds the Nile, faces rising pressure from plastic waste and unsustainable land-use practices.

While Uganda has strengthened policies and legislation to combat pollution, organizers stress that lasting progress requires active public participation alongside regulatory action.

Participants can register for 5km, 10km, and 21km races at Shs 30,000 and will have access to educational exhibitions and interactive sessions on pollution control, waste management, and practical ways to protect water resources.

Organizers also plan to support ongoing research and regional partnerships to improve water quality across the Nile Basin, reinforcing the run’s broader mission of environmental conservation and community engagement.
