Africa-Press – Uganda. The New York Red Bulls announced Tuesday the promotion of Ibrahim Sekagya to the role of full-time First Team Assistant Coach, recognizing his success in player development and performance with the club’s reserve side, Red Bulls II.
The former Uganda Cranes skipper has been head coach of NYRB II since February 6, 2023, and previously served as an assistant coach from the team’s inception in 2015.
“We are pleased to add Ibra to our first team coaching staff on a full-time basis,” said Jochen Schneider, the club’s Head of Sport.
“He has led the development of many great players at NYRB II and led the team to a great start to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season. He has earned this opportunity.”
Sekagya will assume his new responsibilities immediately. His final match in charge of NYRB II will be on Saturday, June 15, when they face Chattanooga FC at MSU Soccer Park.
The MLS giants said a new head coach for the reserve team will be announced at a later date.
In his first full season as head coach, he guided NYRB II to the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 14-8-6 record.
This year, the team sits atop the MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference with a record-breaking 8-2-2 start and a league-leading 27 goals scored.
Among the players Sekagya has helped develop are Omar Valencia, who leads the senior team with five assists, and Mohammed Sofo, who has seven goals across all competitions this season.
A native of Kampala, Uganda, Sekagya played for the New York Red Bulls in 2013 and 2014, making 41 appearances and helping the team win the 2013 Supporters’ Shield.
He also spent six seasons with Red Bull Salzburg, tallying 225 appearances for the Austrian side.
