Africa-PressUganda. Three people have reportedly been shot in Jinja District in eastern Uganda after an armed man suspected to be a security operative opened fire at Boda Boda riders.

Eyewitnesses said one of the victims identified as Farouk Weyubule, Boda Boda rider died on spot while his female passenger who was shot in the thigh is receiving treatment at Alshafa Hospital in Mpumudde, a Jinja City suburb.

The other woman who was shot and injured was roasting maize by the roadside. The shooting incident happened at Mafubira along Jinja-Iganga road.

“We were here seated minding our business when a police officer approached one of our colleagues and grabbed him by the neck. When we tried to intervene, he opened fire and started shooting indiscriminately,” an eye witness said.

Kiira region police spokesperson, Mr Abbey Ngako confirmed the shooting but said he was still gathering details and verifying the information he had.

“I have heard about the shooting. I’m told one person is dead. However, I’m still verifying this,” Mr Ngako said on Thursday evening.

The survivor who was on the deceased’s motorcycle has recalled the incident, saying they were on a Boda Boda when they encountered a man driving badly while speaking on the phone.

“Weyubule told the man to get off the phone. They exchanged words until the driver of the car parked across the road. A physical altercation ensued between the two, and Weyubule was consequently shot in the chest and died on spot,” she said on Friday.
