Tororo Cement Workers Strike over Low Pay, Job Risks

Africa-Press – Uganda. Workers at Tororo Cement Limited have gone on strike, citing poor pay, hazardous working conditions, and job insecurity as reasons for their industrial action.

The strike has cast a spotlight on long-standing concerns over labour rights at one of Uganda’s leading cement producers.

The protest—led by staff from the kiln section, including electricians, mechanics, laboratory technicians, and production personnel—has brought operations at the plant to a near standstill.

Workers say their grievances have been ignored for too long.

“We work under dangerous conditions every day, yet we are treated as disposable. All we want is fair pay and job security,” said one of the striking workers.

The employees are demanding salary increases to reflect the rising cost of living and inflation, which they say have made it nearly impossible to survive on current wages.

Many of them are on temporary contracts and are calling for permanent employment with benefits.

In addition to low pay, the workers expressed serious concerns about safety, alleging that management has failed to provide adequate protection in high-risk sections of the plant.

“There are minimal safety measures. Injuries are common. We need management to take safety seriously and provide protective gear,” said another worker.

By the time of filing this report, efforts to get a comment from Tororo Cement’s management were unsuccessful.

The workers, however, remain firm in their stance and say they will not return to work until their demands are met.

The ongoing strike has already begun disrupting operations, raising concerns over potential delays in cement supply across the country.

As tensions mount, the question remains whether company leadership will engage the workers and seek a resolution.
