Africa-Press – Uganda. Traffic Police have intensified enforcement operations along major highways as Ugandans travel for the festive season, warning motorists to observe traffic regulations in order to reduce road accidents.

Speaking during a traffic operation on Bombo Road in Matuga, Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura urged drivers to exercise caution, noting that the Christmas period is often characterised by heavy traffic congestion and reckless driving.

“We are appealing to all motorists to drive responsibly during this festive season. Many lives are lost due to avoidable accidents caused by speeding, drunk driving and overloading,” Kananura said.

The operation involved checking drivers’ licences, vehicle roadworthiness and compliance with traffic regulations, targeting buses, taxis, motorcycles and private vehicles. Kananura said the exercise will continue into the new year.

“This operation is not temporary. It will continue into next year to ensure discipline on our roads and to protect the lives of all road users,” he added.

Police say road accidents typically increase during the festive season as many people travel from urban centres to rural areas to celebrate Christmas, leading to heavy traffic and risky driving behaviour.

Kananura reminded drivers that the safety of passengers depends largely on their decisions behind the wheel.

“The lives of passengers are in the hands of drivers. Practices such as driving under the influence of alcohol, over-speeding and overloading must stop if we are to save lives,” he warned.

As part of the campaign, traffic officers also conducted road safety sensitisation sessions for drivers, emphasising responsible behaviour and strict adherence to traffic laws. The spokesperson further cautioned both officers and motorists against engaging in corruption.

“We are reminding our officers to work professionally, and we urge members of the public not to offer bribes because corruption undermines road safety,” Kananura said.

Salimu Kayigwa, a motorist using Bombo Road, called on fellow drivers to take regular rest breaks and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before travelling.

“Drivers should allow themselves time to rest so they do not drive while tired. We also need to ensure our vehicles are roadworthy to avoid accidents,” Kayigwa said.

Traffic Police confirmed that the festive season operations, which began on Bombo Road, will be extended to other major highways, including Masaka Road, as authorities step up efforts to curb road accidents during the holiday period.
