Africa-Press – Uganda. Uganda’s digital economy is expanding at a record pace, with new figures revealing 44.3 million active mobile subscriptions, 34.6 million mobile money accounts, and 17.6 million smartphones in use as of June 2025.

The data, released at the State of the Digital Economy forum hosted by Next Media in partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), reflects a country rapidly embracing technology in daily life—from payments and education to commerce and service delivery.

UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo underscored that mobile internet penetration now covers 75 percent of Uganda’s adult population, describing the digital economy as “a force multiplier of everything society does.”

Still, he admitted challenges in smartphone affordability remain significant, noting ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Finance aimed at reducing costs and improving access.

With the theme “Making the Digital Economy Work for All,” the forum emphasized that digital growth must not be left to chance.

Experts called for stronger policy frameworks, affordable infrastructure, and robust cybersecurity measures to protect users as Uganda leans more heavily on digital platforms for transactions, communication, and learning.
