Africa-Press – Uganda. Newly appointed State Minister for Internal Affairs Juma Witonze is expected to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday for vetting ahead of his possible approval by the House.
The session will be chaired by Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth, who heads Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
Lawmakers are expected to examine Witonze’s background, qualifications, competence and suitability for the docket before making a recommendation to Parliament.
Witonze was nominated after Parliament rejected the appointment of Dr Lawrence Muganga to the same position.
Muganga failed to secure approval after the committee raised concerns regarding his multiple citizenship status. During the vetting process, questions emerged over his possession of multiple nationalities, an issue that became central to the committee’s decision.
If approved by Parliament, Witonze will assume office at a time when the Ministry of Internal Affairs remains under public scrutiny over matters relating to security, immigration, citizenship and internal administration.
Members of the committee are expected to focus on his professional track record, policy priorities and his plans for addressing the key challenges facing the ministry.
Following the vetting process, the committee will present its recommendation to the House for consideration and approval.
