Africa-Press – Uganda. A group of youth has petitioned the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC), challenging Fiona Nakku’s eligibility to contest as the party’s flag bearer for the National Female Youth Member of Parliament seat.
The petitioners argue that Nakku has surpassed the youth age limit of 30 years, making her ineligible to participate in youth elections.
They have urged the CEC to “denominate” her from the race ahead of the NRM delegates’ vote.
Speaking after attending the NRM Delegates Conference at the party’s Electoral Commission offices, one petitioner said they had successfully served Nakku with the petition documents in person.
“We filed the petition seeking her denomination on grounds that she is not eligible due to her age. She has always claimed she was never served and did not know about it. Today we served her in person, so she is now aware,” the petitioner said.
Although Nakku reportedly declined to receive the petition copy, the petitioners confirm that service was effected and she is now formally on notice that a case against her is pending.
Copies of the petition have also been submitted to members of the CEC, which holds the authority to determine the matter.
“We are asking CEC members to intervene and ensure the petition is heard and determined. CEC has the power to decide who becomes the party’s flag bearer,” the group added.
The NRM delegates are scheduled to elect the party’s flag bearer for the National Female Youth MP seat on August 25 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, alongside other youth representatives from across Uganda.
Nakku, a known contender for the seat, has not publicly commented on the latest petition challenging her eligibility.
