Liberation Parties No Longer Serve The People, Says Chissano

Africa-Press – Zambia. Former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano has warned that many of Africa’s liberation movements have strayed from their founding mission to serve the people.

Speaking at the African National Congress (ANC) gala dinner in Johannesburg on Friday, ahead of the Liberation Movements Summit, Chissano said some of these parties have become disconnected from the public and resistant to criticism.

He called on liberation movements to renew their policies and refocus their efforts on improving the lives of citizens. He said:

It is crucial that we recognise that in many of our countries we witnessed the weakening of democratic institutions.

Six Southern African liberation movements gathered in Johannesburg to strengthen cooperation and align their political ideologies in the face of shifting global geopolitical dynamics.

The participating parties were ZANU PF, the African National Congress (ANC), the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO), and Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

Held under the theme “Defending the Liberation Gains, Advancing Integrated Socio-Economic Development, Strengthening Solidarity for a Better Africa,” the summit focused on safeguarding their shared legacy, addressing contemporary political challenges, and enhancing regional unity.
