Africa-Press – Zambia. Shaft-sinking at Mingomba Mine in Chililabombwe, on the Copperbelt, is expected to begin next year.

Once fully operational, the mine is projected to become Zambia’s largest copper producer.

Kobold Metals CEO Dr. Kurt House disclosed the development during a meeting with President Hakainde Hichilema at State House, expressing confidence that Mingomba will rank among the biggest copper mines on the African continent.

He described the deposit as one of the greatest undeveloped copper resources globally, noting that 120 kilometers of drilling has been completed in the past two and a half years more than at any time since Zambia’s independence.

President Hichilema hailed the project as a flagship initiative of the Zambia–USA partnership, stating that it will rejuvenate bilateral relations between Lusaka and Washington.

He emphasized that the UPND government’s economic reconstruction agenda, launched in 2021, identified mining as a key driver of national growth. The President also called for safe and legal mining practices, stressing the importance of license integrity.

ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson Phesto Musonda described the development as world-class, revealing that the mine is expected to produce between 400,000 and 500,000 tonnes of high-grade copper annually.

He also confirmed that the employment target is on track, with 671 employees already engaged out of the targeted 700.

Meanwhile, Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe said Zambia is poised to become a global mining powerhouse, with Mingomba Mine serving as a strategic milestone in the country’s mining resurgence.
