Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Five professional golfers were involved in a car accident which claimed the life of Morton Kombai following the conclusion of FBC Zim Open on Sunday.
The golfers were involved in the accident just outside Harare’s central business district and are admitted in hospital.
Zimbabwe Golf Association confirmed that two Zimbabwean golfers, a Ghanaian and a Malawian professional are all hospitalized but Kombai passed on.
ZGA released a statement on Monday confirming the incident and also paying tribute to Kombai.
“It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of a tragic incident that occurred on the evening of Sunday, May 11, following the close of the 2025 FBC Zim Open,” the statement reads.
“Five professional golfers who had just participated in the tournament — including two international players — were involved in a serious road traffic accident at the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Seventh Street in Harare.
We are heartbroken to confirm the passing of Morton Kombai, a respected member of the Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association (ZPGA), who died on the scene. Based in Zvishavane and representing Rolland Park, Morton was known not only for his talent on the course but also for his humility, dedication, and love for the game. He is survived by his wife and two children. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow professionals. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this painful time.
Four other players — Tonderai Masunga (Zimbabwe), Biggie Chibvuri (Zimbabwe and driver of the vehicle), Victor Kachepatsonga (Malawi), and Lucky Ayisa (Ghana) — were injured and are currently receiving medical care at Parirenyatwa Hospital and Kensington Medical Centre. We are relieved to report that they are in stable condition and continue to receive the necessary support.
As the Zim Open Committee and the Zimbabwe Golf Association, we are devastated by this loss and remain in close contact with the relevant medical teams and authorities. We salute all five players for their commitment to the sport and the spirit they brought to the 2025 tournament.”
