Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. KARIBA, May 11 (NewsDayLive) -A fisherman was trampled to death by an elephant on Saturday night while walking from ARDA Fishing Camp to Gache-Gache Fishing Camp near Lake Kariba.
The deceased was identified as Never Kahondo.
According to a local resident, Luke Timire, the fisherman was just a few metres away from the Gache-Gache Fishing Camp when the elephant charged towards him. He fell to the ground, helpless, and lay in a pool of blood until residents came to his aid. They quickly ferried him to Gache-Gatche Clinic, but he succumbed to injuries before he could be transferred to Kariba District Hospital.
“It all happened so fast. The fisherman tried to run, but the elephant was too quick. When we got there, he was lying in a pool of blood. We did our best to get him to the clinic, but unfortunately, it was too late,” said Timire.
Tichaona Manzungu, chairperson of the Gache-Gatche Fishing Association expressed sadness over the incident.
“It’s a sad day for our community,” Manzungu said.
“The deceased was a hardworking fisherman, and his death is painful and a loss to the family and the community.
“We urge everyone to be vigilant and avoid walking alone at night, especially in areas known to have wildlife.
“We will work with relevant authorities to enhance safety measures and prevent such incidents in the future.”
