Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona, says the ongoing Harare-Kanyemba Road project is of strategic importance and is designed to integrate the country into regional trade networks.
“It is not the wealth of the country that builds roads; it is the roads that build the wealth of the country,” Mhona said during a tour of the Harare-Mazowe dualisation works recently.
He said that the project is crucial for attaining Vision 2030, saying that the appropriate and efficient infrastructure promotes inclusiveness by expanding access to vital services and improving economic opportunities for all.
“As everyone has witnessed driving here, a section of the dualised way is already open to traffic up to the New Parliament Traffic Circle and significant progress has been made on the subsequent section, and a portion is expected to be opened to traffic soon to improve trafficability for motorists,” the minister said.
Mhona highlighted the project’s far-reaching benefits, positioning it as more than just an upgrade.
“This project represents a key that will unlock immense potential for Zimbabwe, transforming a neglected corridor into a vibrant economic route, it will make Zimbabwe a critical transit hub within SADC, creating the shortest and most efficient route from Harare to Zambia and the DRC,” he said.
The Minister also said that “a reliable road network is a prerequisite for large-scale mining investment and that for agriculture, this road provides direct access to the agriculturally rich districts of Mbire, Mt. Darwin, and Muzarabani.” minister Mhona said.
Work on the dualization commenced in February last year. The project is being executed by a local contractor, Exodus and Mhona praised the company’s work ethic.
“This quick implementation has, however, not affected the overall quality of the product,” he said.
