Government Grants Four Months For Illegal Schools To Comply

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Government has granted a four-month grace period for all unregistered private schools to regularise their operations or risk closure.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo delivered the ultimatum in the National Assembly on Wednesday, warning that from January 2026, any schools that remain non-compliant will be shut down. Said Moyo:

“We have given illegal schools a grace period of four months because we did not want to close those schools haphazardly, as this would disadvantage the learners because, by so doing, we would have violated their fundamental right, the right to education.

“It is better (for the meantime) that we appeal to directors to follow procedures so that they register their schools, and we have given them a grace period until December 31, so that come January, we can invoke our circulars and close those schools.”

Stakeholders have long raised concerns over the proliferation of illegal private schools, some of which allegedly employ unqualified teachers, operate without Government oversight, and have even been implicated in the misappropriation of examination fees from ZIMSEC candidates.
