Harare Women Accuse Gynaecologist Of Negligence

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A Harare-based gynaecologist, Dr. Chirume, is at the centre of mounting controversy as patients accuse him of negligence, extortion, and mistreatment.

Several women allege that their health worsened under his care, with one complainant saying:

“I reported my symptoms, but he ignored me. Later my condition deteriorated, and I was still billed for extra procedures I never consented to.”

The allegations include claims of exorbitant, upfront demands for payments, dismissive treatment, and poor adherence to medical standards. Critics say this raises serious ethical and legal questions about private medical care in Zimbabwe.

Health watchdogs and civil society groups have called on the Health and Allied Professions Council of Zimbabwe (HAPCZ) to urgently investigate. A communique from one civic group read:

“The pattern of alleged abuse points to systemic failures in oversight. Patient rights must be protected.”

Dr. Chirume has not issued a public response.

The case has heightened public concern about safety, accountability, and transparency in maternal health services, particularly for vulnerable women in the capital. Legal analysts warn that if the allegations are proven, they could result in both disciplinary action and potential criminal liability.
