Heroic Rescue Attempt Ends In Double Drowning Kwekwe

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Two people, including a five-year-old boy and a 31-year-old man, drowned in a two-metre-deep pit at Mzila Compound, Redcliffe, Kwekwe, on Christmas Day.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the boy fell into the pit while trying to retrieve an empty two-litre plastic container he had been playing with.

The man, who was drinking beer nearby, attempted to rescue the child but also fell into the pit and tragically drowned. The ZRP said:

“The ZRP reports a tragic incident in which two people, a five-year-old boy and a 31-year-old man, drowned in a two-metre-deep pit at Mzila Compound, Redcliffe, Kwekwe, on 25/12/25.

“The child was reportedly playing near the pit with an empty two-litre plastic container, which was floating in the water.

“In an attempt to retrieve the container, the minor fell into the pit and drowned.

“A 31-year-old man who was drinking beer nearby attempted to rescue the child but also fell into the pit and drowned.

“The bodies of both victims were later retrieved by patrons from a nearby bar.

“The bodies were conveyed to Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.”
