Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. More than 97 babies were born on Christmas Day at the country’s biggest referral hospitals in Harare and Bulawayo.

In Harare, 47 babies were delivered at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and Chitungwiza Central Hospital (CCH).

Parirenyatwa recorded 16 births, seven girls and nine boys, while CCH welcomed 31 babies, made up of 19 boys and 12 girls.

Statistics from Sally Mugabe Central Hospital were not available at the time of reporting.

Bulawayo saw 50 Christmas Day births at Mpilo Central Hospital and United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).

Mpilo recorded 27 births, while UBH had 23. There were slightly more girls than boys, with 28 girls and 22 boys born.

In 2024, the same major hospitals recorded more than 200 births on Christmas Day.

At UBH, the biggest baby weighed 4.7kg, while the smallest weighed just 1.1kg. Maternity ward matron Nobuhle Thaka said that of the 23 babies born there, four girls and five boys were delivered by Caesarean section.

Mpilo Central Hospital was equally busy. Public relations officer Norma Mabhena said the hospital recorded 11 boys and 16 girls.

Mabhena said that the largest baby, a girl weighing 4 520 grammes, was delivered by Caesarean section, while the smallest, a boy weighing 1 140 grammes, was born through normal delivery and is receiving specialised care.

She added that 17 births were normal deliveries, while 10 were by Caesarean section.
