Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Former Zimbabwe national team captain Benjani Mwaruwari has called on the current Warriors squad to sharpen their finishing if they are to progress to the knockout stages of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Zimbabwe sit with one loss and one draw from their two Group B matches, scoring just two goals in the process.
The Warriors face South Africa on Monday in a decisive Group B encounter, knowing that only a win will guarantee passage to the last 16.
Despite being second-best in Monday’s 2-1 defeat to Egypt, Zimbabwe created several scoring opportunities in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Angola.
Mwaruwari welcomed the team’s ability to create chances but urged the players to convert more of those opportunities if they are to achieve their AFCON ambitions. He said:
“I am really happy with the progress this team is making. You can see now the fluidity and the goals are starting to come; we have moved on from the past, where we just passed the ball without creating chances.
“Now the team is really creating chances, it is looking sharp, but we now need to work on our finishing.
“We are creating chances, and the tournament is about goals. We need to make sure we are clinical and take those chances and score goals, that is how we progress to the next round.”
