HARARE giants Caps United wrapped up the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League in style after dispatching relegated outfit, Kwekwe United 2-0 at Ascot Stadium yesterday.

It was a drab match in the first half but goals from Congolese striker Mugalu Kope Mutsimba and Adam Tende settled the affair.

Kwekwe United were awarded a penalty in the 40th minute, but they failed to convert when Tafadzwa Muzenda’s effort was saved by Caps United’s goalkeeper Stephen Kwaku.

That was the only notable chance of the game for the hosts. However, Caps United surged ahead after the break. In the 48th minute, Congolese striker Mutsimba tapped the ball home from Ishmael Wadi’s cutback to give the hosts the lead.

Then, in the 90th minute, Tende doubled Caps United’s advantage, capitalising on a mishap between Kwekwe United defenders.

Caps United finished the season with 43 points and in ninth position. Relegated Kwekwe United garnered 11 points from 34 matches.

Caps United coach Ian Bakala was happy that he had to save the club’s PSL status and achieve a top 10 finish.

“Well, I think first I have to thank the players — they have done so well. Despite this game, I think it was important for us to get the three points. Looking at how we started, we finished better than we began, which is good. And I think we have to focus on the coming season,” Bakala said.

“When we started, it was very tough — a lot of things were happening. But if we supported the president, I think he has done a lot for us to reach where we had dreamed of reaching, which is good. I think we owe him. We just had this game; I think it was an automatic win for him.

“The president [Farai Jere] also played a very big part in this. Cancelling meetings just to come and support his team is not easy, and I am very happy that we won today, even though we didn’t play according to what we planned.

“Credit goes to the players. You mentioned looking forward to the next season — from a coach’s perspective, it’s my first time coaching in a premiership here, and I have seen and learned a lot.”
