Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A 29-year-old man from Chitungwiza, Providence Shumba, has been sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for robbing a local EcoCash agent.
Shumba was convicted by Chitungwiza magistrate Dennis Mangosi for the robbery that took place at Zvipoto Shops, Unit O, Chitungwiza, where he threatened the victims with death.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority’s Shamiso Charmaine Mwapangira, on June 25, 2025, around 6:30 PM, Shumba entered the shop where EcoCash agent Tafadzwa Gwiti and her friend Loveness Muswe were counting money.
He demanded cash from Gwiti, who handed over US$180. When he ordered Muswe to hand over her money, she refused. Shumba then threatened Muswe with a knife, pointing it at her chest.
He forced both women to cover their faces before stealing US$560 from Muswe’s cash on the shelf, along with three cellphones, an Itel A50C, a Huawei Smart, and a NetOne 1 657 phone, plus Econet recharge cards and a small brown bag.
After the robbery, Shumba ordered the women to uncover their faces and left.
However, the victims called for help, and members of the public pursued Shumba.
He dropped one phone belonging to Tonderai Katema during the chase and was eventually caught by local touts and handed over to the police.
