Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. HARARE, July 30,2025 (NewsDayLive)-The Community Water Alliance (CWA) is today hosting a brown bag event in honour of women involved in the recycling of waste across all provinces.

This comes at a time the sector that has seen remarkable growth and innovation in recent years.

Since 2019, community-based recycling organisations in Zimbabwe have quadrupled, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of sustainable waste management practices.

Government’s launch of the Zero Waste Management Programme marks a significant step towards addressing the nation’s waste management challenges.

This initiative not only emphasises the importance of reducing waste, but also encourages community involvement and empowerment, particularly among women.

The event will feature voices from key figures in the waste management sector, including Haardlife Mudzingwa, the executive director of CWA, and Chris Gohwori, a CWA programmes officer and a beneficiary of waste management initiatives in the Tafara high-density suburb of Harare.

Both speakers are expected to share insights on the transformative impact of women-led recycling efforts and the role they play in achieving sustainability goals.

In an interview recently, Mudzingwa highlighted the critical role women are playing in waste recycling.

“Women have become the backbone of community recycling efforts,” he said.

“Their resilience and innovation are pivotal in driving the Zero Waste Management Programme forward.

“This event showcases their contributions and the need for continued support and recognition.”

In another engagement with NewsDayLive, Gohwori, who has witnessed first-hand the benefits of community recycling initiatives, emphasized the program’s effects on local livelihoods.

“Through these initiatives, we are not only managing waste but also creating jobs and fostering a sense of community.

“Women are leading the charge in recycling, turning waste into valuable resources. This is about empowerment and sustainability,” he asserted.

Zimbabwe is increasingly adopting innovative waste-to-energy projects that convert waste into renewable energy, aligning with global sustainability objectives.

These initiatives signify a bold step towards a cleaner environment and a more sustainable future.

By integrating localised community recycling activities with advanced waste management practices, the nation is setting a precedent for responsible waste handling and environmental stewardship.
