From ghetto dreams to EP streams: Twentyseven unveils EP

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Emerging from the vibrant heart of Zimbabwe’s urban music scene, Twentyseven is a name quickly becoming impossible to ignore. With a raw blend of rap, heartfelt lyrics and social consciousness, the young artiste marked a major milestone on July 27, with the release of his debut extended play (EP), Togara Sei.

Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, Twentyseven, real name Tanyaradzwa Chimombe, said the five-track project, titled in Shona to ask, “What’s going on?”, is more than just music; it’s a reflection.

“A reflection of life in the ghetto, the struggles of youth and the internal questions we often face. Each track offers a piece of my mind and soul, shaped by the rhythms of everyday life and the challenges of a society in transition,” he said.

Tweentyseven said music had always been part of him, adding that he believed he was gifted to do that. I recall starting my journey back in Grade 4, when a childhood love for singing and dancing began to bloom. The dream of performing to a big audience is slowly becoming a reality.

The artiste said the Togara Sei EP was a carefully curated offering, featuring five tracks that combine introspective lyrics, Afro urban beats and authentic storytelling. Notable collaborations include TadiwaSaint on the powerful track My Power and WoodsMusic on Kana Zvaita, the fifth track of the project.

“Standout single Ghetto, already accompanied by a gritty and evocative music video directed by Sir Aleck, speaks directly to the experience of growing up in high-density suburbs. It’s a voice for the voiceless and a mirror to the neglected,” Twentyseven said.

The artiste said 10 songs in, and he’s just getting started.

He now boasts 10 officially released songs, each carving a niche in Zimbabwe’s growing music landscape. His work bridges the gap between lyrical rap, Afro-infused sounds and socially-aware narratives.

“More than just a stage name, Twentyseven is a statement of identity and timing. As he builds his catalogue, network and audience, he remains rooted in purpose and the community that raised him. Togara Sei is not just a question, it’s a call to think, to feel and to rise,” he said.
