Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A 32-year-old Harare man has appeared in court on allegations of defrauding a client of his US$9 310 in a botched vehicle importation deal.
Owen Matamai appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai facing a charge of fraud and was remanded in custody to Monday for bail application.
According to the State, sometime in March 2024, the complainant Patson Hamadziripi Machiridza engaged Matamai for the importation of a Honda Vezel 2015 model from Japan.
Matamai was given US$7 810, and after a month, told Machiridza that the car had been delivered in Tanzania. Machirisza then gave Matamai a further US$ 1500, which was for logistics to bring the car to Zimbabwe.
After receiving the money Matamai became evasive and did not deliver the car as agreed.
It is allged that Machiridza then made a report to the police. leading to Matai’s arrest.
The total value stolen was US$9 310, and nothing was recovered.
