Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Harare City Council has received 16 project vehicles to mark the start of its partnership with Helcraw Water (Pvt) Ltd, aimed at boosting water production and delivery for the city’s residents.
According to the Council, the vehicles will be used by staff to attend to faults, install water meters, rehabilitate existing infrastructure, including the Morton Jaffray Waterworks, and maintain water distribution networks across Harare.
On Monday, 06 October, Mayor Jacob Mafume and Acting Town Clerk Phakamile Mabhena Moyo met with Helcraw Water’s leadership, led by Group CEO Brendon Jere, at Town House for the official handover of the first batch of vehicles procured under the Helcraw Water Project. Speaking at the ceremony, Moyo said:
“These vehicles are not merely assets; they are tools of service that will directly enhance the operational capacity, efficiency, and responsiveness of the dedicated teams on the ground.
“By investing in reliable logistics, we have given assurance that the Helcraw Water Project can accelerate its milestones, maintain our crucial infrastructure, and ultimately deliver on its promise of a reliable water supply.”
Jere said the partnership between the City of Harare and Helcraw Water would improve both water quality and distribution.
He added that the company would repair all burst pipes across the city to tackle non-revenue water, a pressing issue that requires urgent attention. Said Jere:
“We are going to replace current postpaid meters with prepaid meters in all areas receiving water in Harare.
“The third part of our project involves rehabilitating Morton Jaffray to increase its pumping capacity from 300 to 520 megalitres a day.”
Mafume said the new vehicles from the Helcraw Water Project would help tackle long-standing issues such as burst pipes and blocked sewers, allowing for faster response times.
The Mayor welcomed the initiative as a new chapter for the city and called on all stakeholders to work together to make Harare a city of beauty where everyone aspires to live.
The council is set to receive another 24 vehicles as part of the ongoing project.
